How to Increase Self-Worth in the Workplace Part 1
Understanding Self-Worth and its Connection to Values
Self-worth is more than just a buzzword; it’s about how we view ourselves based on how we live our values. The term "self-worth" originates from the Latin word meaning "self-value." Our sense of worth directly correlates with how well we align with our core beliefs and values.
Values are those fundamental truths we hold dear and believe in deeply. As leaders, it’s essential to help others elevate their own values. This means guiding employees not just in their professional development, but in their overall growth as individuals. Are you helping your team members become better people? Are you contributing to them becoming better parents, spouses, friends, and colleagues? When you do, you’re fostering an environment where people strive to reach their full potential.
Living true to one's values is a powerful indicator of self-worth. When individuals live in harmony with what they consider important—be it honesty, family, service, or equality—they feel fulfilled and valued. Conversely, ignoring those values leads to feelings of guilt. Guilt isn’t inherently negative; it’s a natural response urging us to return to what we know is right.
The Role of Values in Building Self-Worth and Overcoming Shame
One of the most valuable life lessons involves recognizing when we’ve strayed from our values and making a conscious choice to realign. If this misalignment persists, guilt can evolve into shame. Unlike guilt, which signals that a particular action was wrong, shame goes deeper, making us feel as if we, as individuals, are inherently flawed. This mindset can erode our sense of self-worth and prevent us from living in alignment with our values.
I remember a childhood experience that illustrates this lesson. The first time I used a swear word, my dad spoke to me with calm understanding. He asked, “If Christ were standing beside you, would you say that word?” His gentle reminder helped me realize that my actions were incongruent with my values. That moment marked a pivotal change as I decided to realign myself with what I believed to be true.
It’s these small yet powerful lessons that help strengthen our self-worth. The ability to recognize when we are off track, coupled with the determination to correct our course, reinforces our connection to our core values and deepens our sense of self-value. We all seek love and connection, and living in alignment with our values is one of the most direct paths to achieving that fulfillment.
